A snowy egret (Egretta thula) displays its pristine white plumage as it takes flight across the mangrove-lined waters of Golfo Dulce. With dramatic wing extension and vivid yellow feet trailing behind, this graceful wading bird navigates between feeding grounds in Costa Rica's coastal wetlands. These shallow, sheltered waters provide ideal habitat for egrets, which hunt small fish and invertebrates among the tangle of partially submerged roots where land meets sea in one of Central America's most biologically diverse ecosystems.
