A weathered fishing buoy, transformed into a memorial, hangs from a gnarled tree branch in the Kalaupapa settlement on Molokai. The handwritten Hawaiian inscription reads "Aloha Kalaupapa," followed by a date and a dedication. In the background stands one of the settlement's modest homes, framed by the ever-present mountains that once imprisoned but now protect this community. Such personal artifacts reflect how residents of this former Hansen's disease colony created meaning and connection in a place of forced isolation, blending Hawaiian cultural practices with everyday objects to commemorate loved ones and mark the passage of time.
