A SCUBA diver documents an endangered giant sea bass (Stereolepis gigas) amid the ethereal underwater landscape of Channel Islands National Park. These massive fish, once hunted to near extinction, are making a gradual comeback within the park's protected kelp forests. Growing up to 700 pounds and living more than 75 years, giant sea bass are sentinels of ecosystem health. Researchers collect footage of these gentle giants to monitor population recovery and better understand their role in maintaining the balance of California's marine ecosystems.
