Spiky seedheads of Lion's Ear (Leonotis nepetifolia), an invasive plant harmful to Molokai's native ecosystems, stand beneath the twisted branches of a kiawe tree on the island's western shore. This non-native species, with its distinctive spherical brown flower clusters, has found an unfortunate foothold on the abandoned fairways of what was once a manicured golf course. As development plans have come and gone on Hawaii's least commercialized island, this ecological intruder has reclaimed these open spaces—a visual reminder of the delicate balance Molokai maintains, not only preserving its rural character against resort development but also protecting its indigenous plants from aggressive introduced species that threaten the island's biological heritage.
