Weathered memorial poles rise from the vibrant green meadow of SGang Gwaay, their carved figures fading gradually back into the cedar from which they emerged generations ago. This UNESCO-protected village site, known as Ninstints to early European explorers, represents one of the most significant surviving examples of Pacific Northwest Indigenous architecture and mortuary art, with monumental poles that have stood in place since the late 1800s despite the harsh maritime environment.
