The original meteorological observation tower, now replaced by its 120 foot cousin, at the Mauna Loa Observatory or MLO on Hilo, Hawaii. This is the original tower that Dr. Keeling used to take C02 samples with in the 1960's. MLO is located on the north flank of the Mauna Loa Volcano at an altitude of 11,135 feet above sea level and has been continuously monitoring and collecting data related to climate change, atmospheric composition and air quality since the 1950's. MLO's location situates it in a prime spot for sampling the Earth's background air in the well mixed free troposphere. Today, the observatory is best known for its measurements of rising anthropognic carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere. This trend is sometimes referred to as the "Keeling Curve".
