A solitary figure traverses the honeycomb pattern of the ancient Maras salt pans, their red poncho creating a striking contrast against the mosaic of amber, ochre, and ivory evaporation pools carved into the mountainside of Peru's Sacred Valley. Dating back to pre-Inca civilization, these salineras have been continuously harvested for over 500 years, producing mineral-rich salt from a subterranean spring whose waters emerge with up to 26 times the salinity of seawater and crystallize through traditional methods unchanged by centuries.
