St. Joseph's Mission Church stands serenely among vibrant bougainvillea blossoms (Bougainvillea spectabilis) on Molokai. Built by Father Damien—now Saint Damien of Molokai—who dedicated his life to serving those exiled to Kalaupapa's leprosy settlement until his own death from the disease in 1889. This simple wooden structure represents both the painful history of isolation experienced by thousands of Hawaiians forced into quarantine and the compassionate response that emerged. The church's modest architecture contrasts with its profound historical significance as a monument to human dignity, faith, and service amid suffering.
