Marine archaeologists Dr. Chris Horrell and Dr. Frederick "Fritz" Hanselmann meticulously record measurements of a second 16th-century anchor discovered in the turquoise waters off Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. This significant find, uncovered during the 2019 field season using innovative archaeological techniques developed specifically for the project, strengthens evidence of Cortés' deliberate scuttling of his fleet—a calculated decision that committed his men to the inland conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1519.
