Morro Rock dominates the harbor entrance with its massive geological presence as sailboats anchor peacefully in its shadow. This striking volcanic plug, formed when magma hardened within the vent of an ancient volcano 23 million years ago, survived while the mountain surrounding it eroded away, leaving behind one of the most recognizable navigational landmarks on the California coast.
