Aerial view of the stone foundations that mark where Hernán Cortés built his fortress in 1519, establishing Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz as the first permanent Spanish settlement in mainland Mexico. These humble ruins, now reclaimed by tropical vegetation, represent the strategic launching point from which Cortés would orchestrate his ambitious campaign to conquer the Aztec Empire. The settlement's prime coastal position offered both protection and a vital link to Spain across the Atlantic.
