Clinging to a granite cliff face 3,000 feet above Bhutan's Paro Valley, the sacred Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) stands dramatically against the mountainside, its white walls and gilded roofs catching the late morning sunlight against a backdrop of deep blue sky and distant forested slopes. Built in 1692 around the cave where Guru Rinpoche, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan, is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours in the 8th century, this remote monastery continues to serve as both an active religious center and a powerful symbol of Bhutan's cultural identity and spiritual heritage.
