A giant manta ray (Mobula birostris) soars gracefully through shafts of sunlight penetrating the waters near Santiago Island in the Galápagos, its distinctive silhouette captured in haunting black and white. These filter-feeding giants, reaching wingspans of up to seven meters, travel between feeding grounds and cleaning stations where smaller reef fish remove parasites from their massive bodies, performing an essential ecological service in this UNESCO World Heritage marine ecosystem.
