Archaeological divers examine the astonishingly well-preserved remains of the Encarnación, a Spanish merchant vessel discovered in 2011 while searching for Morgan's lost ships. The grid-like pattern visible on the seafloor reveals tightly packed cargo boxes that have remained intact since the ship sank in 1681, protected by burial in sand and mud. This unexpected find—with its bottom hull structure and cargo still in original position—provides an unprecedented window into Spanish colonial trade a decade after Morgan's raid destabilized the region.
