Guest accommodations glow beneath a star-filled sky at Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai, Hawaii. These quarters were built to host visiting family members, allowing them to reconnect with loved ones isolated by Hawaii's century-long quarantine policy for Hansen's disease patients. After the isolation law was abolished in 1969, such structures became vital bridges between the peninsula's residents and the outside world. Today, with fewer than a dozen former patients remaining, these buildings serve researchers, staff, and descendants seeking to understand the extraordinary history of resilience that unfolded in this remote coastal settlement.
