Waves crash against the volcanic shoreline of Kalaupapa Peninsula while palm trees sway above weathered buildings nestled between the turbulent Pacific Ocean and the imposing 2,000-foot cliffs that physically isolated this community from the rest of Molokai. This hauntingly beautiful landscape served as a forced quarantine site for approximately 8,000 Hansen's disease patients between 1866 and 1969, a place of both profound suffering and remarkable resilience now preserved as Kalaupapa National Historical Park.
