Lead cargo seals recovered from the surprisingly well-preserved "Horseshoe Wreck" display maker's marks and commercial information against a vibrant red background. These small but significant artifacts helped identify the wreck as Encarnación, a Spanish merchant ship that sank in 1681. Discovered while searching for Morgan's fleet, one seal bears a fleur-de-lis suggesting French origin—evidence of illicit cross-national trade flourishing despite Spain's strict commercial regulations. This unexpected discovery provides rare insights into the economic reality of colonial Panama a decade after Morgan's raid.
