The prehistoric-looking eye of a nurse shark reveals the ancient lineage of these nocturnal hunters. Reaching lengths of up to 14 feet, these generally docile sharks spend daylight hours resting in large, inactive groups throughout Channel Islands National Park. At night, they emerge to hunt, using specialized sensory adaptations to locate dormant fish that would otherwise evade capture. Their unique hunting strategy has evolved over millions of years, allowing them to occupy a specific ecological niche within the park's protected waters.
