Strawberry anemones (Corynactis californica) create a living tapestry beneath the waves of Channel Islands National Park. Though resembling sea anemones, these colonial cnidarians are more closely related to stony corals. Their delicate tentacles, tipped with white bulbs, capture microscopic prey in waters deeper than ten feet, forming vibrant underwater gardens in this protected marine sanctuary. Scientists study these organisms to understand how changing ocean conditions affect California's diverse subsea ecosystems.
