A chestnut-mandibled toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus) surveys its rainforest domain from a high branch in Costa Rica's Golfo Dulce region. With its enormous, colorful bill and distinctive yellow face, this iconic rainforest dweller plays a vital ecological role as a seed disperser, helping maintain the genetic diversity of tropical tree species. Researchers studying this region's extraordinary biodiversity monitor such keystone species as indicators of ecosystem health in one of Central America's most pristine remaining rainforests.
