  • A elementary age Brazilian boy in the Calabar Favela in Salvador, Brazil. A favela is the Brazilian equivalent of a shanty town. The majority have electricity, but in most cases it is illegally tapped from the public grid. The Calabar favela is the oldest favela in Salvador, dating from 1913. Although it was originally built on the outskirts of the city, the city has grown around it, and it is now sandwiched between a rich and a middle class neighborhood. Calabar is a shining example of community action. There are no public schools in the favela, so the members of the community have organized their own. It receives no financial assistance from the government, subsisting on the proceeds from bake sales, donations, and grants from non-governmental organizations.
